From Nineteen to National President: Vanessa Birchler Spotlight

We spent some time with the 104th National President of JCI USA, Vanessa Birchler.

You’ve been a member for 17 (!) years, what have you learned?

I joined the New Baden Jaycees when I was just 19 years old.  Like most 19 year olds I thought I had life figured out, but boy was I wrong!  My time in JCI has taught me many life lessons and skills that have made me a better friend, co-worker, Jaycee and an overall better human being.

One thing that I have learned over the past 17 years is that leadership is a dynamic and ever-evolving journey, one that requires continuous learning and adaptation.  For me, the transformation into a more effective leader has been deeply intertwined with the development of my communication skills and the fostering of teamwork and collaboration. This evolution has not only enriched my professional life but has also enhanced my ability to inspire and guide others.

Effective communication is the cornerstone of successful leadership. Early in my career, I recognized that my ability to convey ideas clearly and listen actively was crucial to building trust and understanding within my team. Here are some key ways improved communication has shaped my leadership journey:

  1. Clarity and Precision: I learned that clear, concise communication eliminates confusion and ensures everyone is on the same page. By articulating goals, expectations, and feedback effectively, I have been able to drive my team towards our shared objectives with greater efficiency.
  2. Active Listening: Communication is not just about speaking but also about listening. By honing my active listening skills, I have become more attuned to the needs and concerns of my team members. This has fostered a more inclusive and supportive environment where everyone feels heard and valued.
  3. Empathy and Understanding: Developing empathy has allowed me to connect with my team on a deeper level. Understanding their perspectives and challenges has enabled me to provide better support and guidance, thereby enhancing their performance and job satisfaction.
  4. Conflict Resolution: Improved communication skills have equipped me to handle conflicts more effectively. By addressing issues promptly and diplomatically, I have been able to maintain a harmonious work environment, which is essential for team productivity and morale.

You’ve led teams from the local level to the national levels. Got any tips for us?

While individual skills and contributions are important, the true strength of any organization lies in its ability to work together as a cohesive unit. Embracing teamwork and collaboration has been a pivotal aspect of my leadership evolution. Here’s how:

  1. Leveraging Diverse Talents: Recognizing the unique strengths and talents of each team member has allowed us to collaborate more effectively. By creating opportunities for everyone to contribute their best, we have achieved remarkable synergy and innovation.
  2. Building Trust and Respect: Teamwork thrives on trust and mutual respect. Through transparent communication and consistent support, I have fostered an environment where team members feel confident in sharing ideas and taking risks. This has led to greater creativity and problem-solving capabilities.
  3. Shared Goals and Accountability: Setting common goals and holding each other accountable has unified our efforts. When everyone is committed to the same objectives, it creates a sense of purpose and camaraderie that drives collective success.
  4. Encouraging Open Dialogue: Promoting open dialogue has been crucial in ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard. This collaborative approach has led to better decision-making and has empowered team members to take ownership of their roles and responsibilities.

Has your leadership style changed from all of these experiences?

The journey of enhancing my communication skills and fostering teamwork has significantly impacted my leadership style. I have transitioned from a more directive approach to one that is inclusive and empowering. This shift has not only improved team dynamics but has also led to better outcomes and higher levels of engagement.

  1. Transformational Leadership: By focusing on communication and collaboration, I have embraced a transformational leadership style. This involves inspiring and motivating my team to achieve their full potential, fostering innovation, and driving positive change within the organization.
  2. Servant Leadership: Placing the needs of my team above my own has been a key aspect of my evolution. By serving others and prioritizing their development and well-being, I have cultivated a loyal and high-performing team.
  3. Adaptive Leadership: The ability to adapt my communication and collaboration strategies to different situations has made me a more versatile leader. This flexibility has been crucial in navigating the complexities and challenges of today’s fast-paced business environment.

In 2007, if you would have told me I would learn these skills through my JCI career I would have never believed you nor would I have believed you that I would develop these skills through an organization I joined to meet new people.  My mentors encouraged me to take on a new role or challenge and were there to help me navigate the growth I needed to experience to help me evolve into the leader I am today.  I am grateful others always pushed me and guided me to see where I needed to develop my leadership skills.  The role of National President is not always easy but I am thankful for those who saw my potential and pushed me to be better as I evolved into who I am today.

Any last thoughts for us?

Today, I am the Jaycee who sees the potential in others, pushes them to evolve and do just a bit more.  I hope those individuals see that I am pushing them because I see their potential and their ability to be great leaders within JCI and beyond.  Remember we never quit evolving, continue to seek the opportunities that allow you to!
